9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Glaucoma -
Glaucoma is a
group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve
is the main nerve to the eye (located in the back of the eye) that
is responsible for transmitting electrical impulses to the brain.
Damage usually occurs as a result of elevated pressure of the
fluid (aqueous humor) in the eye. This damage results in gradual
visual changes and then loss of vision. This course is designed to
provide an overview of glaucoma. Topics of discussion will include
types of glaucoma, methods of diagnosis, causes, effects, and
treatment options, including drugs and surgical procedures. Upon
completion of this course, the learner should be able to: describe
various types of glaucoma; explain the effects of glaucoma on
vision; understand diagnostic testing procedures; recognize names
of drugs used to control glaucoma; explain what types of surgery
might be used to control glaucoma.

This
introduction course should provide those in attendance with a
basic understanding of the refractive status of the eye and the
procedures used in determining refractive error for both a
spectacle or contact lens prescription. The three parts of a
visual examination along with instruments and equipment used for
vision analysis will be presented. Differences between an
Objective and Manifest refraction as well as various procedures
and tests will be explained. Subjective refraction will be
discussed. The principle meridians of refractive power and their
relationship in calculating the spectacle lens power will be
discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the differences between a
refractive evaluation and a complete ocular examination.
